On Our Doorstep

‘When I grow up, I’ll marry a handsome prince and live in a huge castle with beautiful children and have lots of pretty dresses.’

Said  four year old me.

Fast forward thirty years and I married… Well he’s MY handsome prince… I have one beautiful little girl and some day soon I’ll lose enough weight to go out and buy plenty pretty dresses. But living in a rented house, answering to a tyrant of a landlord who insists on inspecting the property every five minutes whilst conveniently forgetting about the repairs that fall under their jurisdiction was not part of the dream.

Reality is: saving up for a deposit on our first home, whilst renting is bordering on impossible. Something’s gotta give.

So we find ourselves sacrificing lovely holidays abroad and admiring our friends’ gorgeous tans and relaxed demeanours, trying hard not to turn green with envy.

But as the six week summer break arrived, it brought with it a longing to get away somewhere…anywhere! A friend of mine in a similar position to us suggested we go ‘glamping’ the craze that swept the world some time ago, I know, but I’m slow to catch on, okay?

With the husband starting a new job and not wanting to upset the new boss right away by taking holidays left, right and centre, we could only really do weekends. So, in true Kate fashion, I set about frantically emailing ‘somewhere…anywhere’ and eventually found somewhere that looked ideal.

Booked it, packed it… Realised it was twenty minutes away from us and began to have doubts.

Was it really a holiday if it was right on our doorstep? It still had the same postal code for goodness sake! After much consideration, (Husband saying tough it’s booked now)I decided it was more about creating memories for the little one than escaping to exotic places and so we went.

What we found made us forget the postal code completely. There, right on our doorstep (and up the blank a bit) was the most beautiful, breathtaking scenery we had seen in a long time. Atop a stunning hillside we could, in the words of our daughter, see the world.

We proceeded to spend the most fantastic weekend ‘glamping’ in our yurt.

The whole experience opened my eyes to exactly what we have around us.

A short drive and all the peace and tranquility the Seychelles has to offer can be found (okay, maybe not quite the same climate but we can’t have everything!)

And so, as I write, I’m waiting for the husband to reply to my (slightly nagging) text asking when if he can get some days next week so I can plan my next adventure on our doorstep.

(All we need now is matching waterproof coats…heehee)

Sweet dreams
